Work at Home Help from the BBB
If you want to find a job that allows you to work at home, help is not too hard to find. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of sites you can find online that offers a wide range of home based job opportunities. Then again, aside from finding a list of possible work from home options, the Internet is also full of work at home scams. Below are some of the most common scams you need to stay away from:
• Envelope Stuffing
The typical ad you will see for this work at home scam is “$350 Weekly Guaranteed! Work two hours daily at home stuffing envelopes.” Yes, it sounds convincing but it is also the number one scam in the list of the BBB or the Better Business Bureau.
The real deal about this work at home scam is that you may not really receive the envelopes for stuffing. What you end up getting are promotional materials that will just ask you cash so you can get details about various money making projects. When you send money, you will just receive instructions on how you can place the same kind of ad that the advertiser placed initially. If you follow through with this, you may end up spending hundreds of dollars for postage, envelopes, advertising and even printing.
• Work at Home Assembly
When it comes to this work at home scam, you will most likely see the ad as “Assembly work at home! Easy money assembling craft items. No experience necessary.”
If you will believe the ad, you may invest hundreds of dollars worth of materials and instructions. You may also waste many hours producing items like toy clowns, booties and plastic signs for the company who promised to buy them. After getting the supplies, they will notify you that the company has decided not to pay due to failure in meeting certain standards. You will be left with the merchandise you may never be able to sell.
• Medical Insurance Claims Processing
This work at home scam will have an ad like this – “You can earn from $800 to $1000 weekly processing insurance claims on your home computer for health care professionals such as doctors, dentists chiropractors, and podiatrists. Over 80% of providers need your services. Learn how in one day!” The scheme will entice you to a business opportunity trade show at a convention center or hotel. You may also be asked to buy computers and software programs at very expensive prices (Imagine buying a software for thousands of dollars when you can actually buy it at a software store for only $69). Furthermore, you may also be asked to coordinate with insurance companies via a central computer; you will be required to pay for costly training sessions that are available at a special rate now and will be sold at a higher price in the future.
When looking for job offers to work at home, help can be availed either from reputable job sites. You also need to be wary of the companies you transact with. It is best to examine the offers carefully. To check if the company is legitimate or reliable, you can coordinate with your local BBB or Better Business Bureau. If you are a victim of a scam, you can also find help from the US Postal Inspection Service and the general office of the state attorney.
